Book Two: That Summer: Chapters Nine and Ten Summary

That Saturday, most of the town turns out for the Fall Preview Fashion Show where Gwendolyn is supposed to be putting in a personal appearance. Casey meets Haven after work, lamenting the lack of privacy her parents are giving her and how both sets of parents seem to be acting together to keep them apart. Gwendolyn Rogers is introduced - just a shadow of her former self. She thanks them for having her and all applaud but nothing else comes from her. Finally she suggests they begin the show in a flat, controlled cadence. It begins well enough, but the models parade in more and more suggestive clothing, in total opposition to the 'Back to School' theme. Afterward, the girls gather with Gwendolyn for photographs and she stands there...
