Scarlett Thomas calls Halley at Camp Believe and tells her that Michael Sherwood is dead, asking her if she can come home. Halley immediately agrees. As soon as she hangs up, Halley calls her mother and begs her to come and get her. After convincing her, she hands the phone to Ruth, the camp's director. It takes a long time for Halley to get back to sleep, remembering Michael and how he and Scarlett looked just a few weeks earlier at the lake. Halley's mother isn't thrilled with having to pick her up early, and the look on her face is evidence of that, but she is gracious when Halley thanks her and softens her tone.
