Pahom
Pahom is the story’s main character. He is a farmer in the Russian countryside. At the beginning of the story, he feels almost completely satisfied with his life, with his only complaint being that he desired to own more land. Soon after, he sells his farm and manages to buy an even bigger and more bountiful plot of farmland. However, he becomes frustrated when neighbors allow their cattle to graze on his land. The resulting disputes cause grudges between Pahom and his neighbors. He then finds a larger area of land in a distant village, so he sells his land and moves there. Each time Pahom relocates to a larger plot of land, his resulting satisfaction lasts only a short time before he once again feels that he needs more land.
