Summary
In "30,000 Years Beneath a Eulogy," Cliff traveled to Siberia to take over his daughter Clara's work after her death. Just before her death, Clara had discovered "the thirty-thousand-year-old remains of a girl" (1).
Shortly after the crew expressed their condolences, they told Cliff that they were in quarantine. The girls' remains could contain an unfamiliar virus. While the rest of the group watched movies, Cliff searched Clara's belongings for "the purple crystal pendant she'd had when [they] adopted her" (3). The pendant was missing. He did find her dogū doll, a figurine "capable of absorbing negative energy, evil, and illness" (12). It was supposed to protect a person. After Clara's funeral, Cliff's wife Miki realized that Clara never needed them, but their granddaughter Yumi did.
