Summary
In Chapter 27, the family gathered with extended family and friends the night before the wedding. Sandra learned that her paternal grandfather had heard about her activism and approved. When it came time to leave, Sandra was torn because she wanted to stay, but she was about to begin college. Back in America, Sandra moved to a dorm at Houghton College, the Christian university that Princesse had attended. She quickly made friends. Many knew about her past because of her activism, and she had to accept that. Some men from the Banyamulenge tribe were “concerned that a young woman was speaking for our tribe” (225), but Sandra felt she was simply telling her story. Some men called Prudence with their concerns. He listened but encouraged Sandra to “do what you want” (226). Sandra briefly dated a tattoo artist who tattooed a black heart on her collarbone...
