Summary
In Chapter 24, Sandra was a junior in high school, and the reunion was held in Syracuse, New York. A friend had suggested she photograph survivors and record their stories. Though having a gallery show her work “seemed like a pipe dream” (192), she took a camera. Sandra and Alex, with advice from a friend named Joanna, put together the photos and stories. As people shared their stories, Sandra felt herself beginning to heal. Rachel talked about running for her life. She said, “We grew up fleeing from place to place, and our fathers and mothers carried us on their backs. We also started fleeing with our own children on our backs, because every year, we expected persecution” (193). Sandra carefully put together the exhibit and the gallery accepted it.
