Summary
Now in Chapter 19, it is October, and London has cooled off. Belinda and Amma are both home sick. Belinda is worried about missing school and falling behind, but Amma is more nonchalant. They settle into the living room and watch TV together, and Amma notices that Belinda turns away when actors kiss. Outside, the girls hear voices, and Helena and Nana have arrived at the house at the same time.
Belinda continues to tidy up the living room despite Nana’s orders, but she does so more sneakily now. She misses Mary, and thinks to herself that it is difficult to fold sheets without her to help. She remembers the last time that she was sick, and how her mother had taken care of her. As she folds, she watches a fox through the window overlooking the garden.
