Annaleigh Thaumas
Annaleigh Thaumas is the protagonist and narrator of the novel. She is the sixth-eldest Thaumas daughter and deeply mourns her late sisters' deaths. She begins to investigate the death of Eulalie, thinking it was a murder, which leads to her meeting Cassius. She has no idea that Cassius has spoken to her late sisters and knows about her, but the two rapidly fall in love.
Annaleigh, aside from her preoccupation with Eulalie's murder and her feelings for Cassius, is also busy trying to ensure that her sisters' antics do not threaten the family. As the girls begin attending secret balls, it becomes evident that some dark magic is at work. Annaleigh is the first to notice Morella's dark intentions, the balls' false brilliance, and the terrible effects that all these things are having on little Verity. When Annaleigh, too, begins to see visions of her dead sisters...
