The Deerfield House
The Deerfield House is a symbol of Thomas Deerfield's standing in the community. As a miller, he has a nice house by the standards of the time and place, though it was smaller and less impressive than the home where Mary grew up in England. There are other houses that are equally nice, but many of Mary's peers live in smaller homes.
Simples
"Simples" is the term used for rudimentary herbal medicines and a symbol of the limits of medical knowledge during this time.
Forks
Forks are accepted as symbols of a relationship with the Devil. Mary's parents say people in England are beginning to use forks and predict people in Boston will follow suit. As utensils that will become generally accepted, they symbolize how things change. When Thomas spears Mary's hand with a fork, it is a symbol of his brutality.
