Summary
In Chapter 31, Mary takes two forks from her mother's cabinet without Priscilla's knowledge. She continues working on the details of her plan. Reverend Norton visits, saying Reverend Eliot is “grateful” that Mary is working with the Hawke children and wants her to begin working with Indians soon. When he leaves, Mary discovers Catherine staring at the mark on the door frame, but she quickly looks away. Another day, Mary puts the poison in a different bottle and puts the empty poison bottle, the forks, and the pestle in Catherine's bedding. This is part of her plan but she has moments of doubt. That night, Mary invites a neighbor, Isaac Willard, to dinner. (He is the man who berated Mary for chastising Beth's son.) When no one is looking, Mary dumps all the poison in Thomas's tankard.
