Summary
In Chapter 16, Mary and her parents arrive home to find Peregrine there. She says she feels bad about her previous conversation with Mary and brought stewed apples to make up for it. Peregrine says she and Rebeckah made them together. Mary is moved by the apology. Peregrine offers a word of warning, saying Mary should be frightened by the things others are saying about her. She knows there is an attraction between Mary and Jonathan. She warns Mary to stay away from him. She again urges Mary to be careful and leaves. Mary thinks about the warning. Mary appreciates the gift of stewed apples, but they taste tart. She eats only a bite. Abigail eats some, but Hannah is the only one who eats all of her share. Thomas arrives.
