Summary
Jess and Theo eat lunch before going to inspect a painting of Lexington. Theo brings Clancy, and Jess is delighted that he owns a kelpie (an Australian breed). Theo discusses his time playing polo at Oxford; he thinks of the racism he encountered there, and does not “feel like going into any of it with Jess” (168).
In 1853, Pryor sends for Jarret when Lexington comes down with colic. Jarret nurses Lexington and tells Pryor that he will “not leave [Lexington] again” (173). Jarret tends to the horse and soon resolves to learn to read. He approaches the plantation’s Black preacher, Uncle Jack, who reads him a Bible verse about horses. Jack begins to teach Jarret simple words and phrases. Ten Broeck soon tells Jarret to travel, along with Lexington, to New Orleans. En route to the ferry, he encounters two men who accuse him...
