Summary
Jarret continues to train Darley, who takes to “having a rider faster than any horse Jarret had ever worked” (78). Harry uses his savings to free Beth, another slave at the Meadows, and she moves in with the Lewises. One night, Jarret finds Mary Barr recklessly riding her horse in the barn ring. She tearfully tells Jarret that her father “makes my mother the most complete slave I know” (81). Cassius Clay interrupts them and initially grows angry at Jarret’s presence. He eventually dismisses Jarrett, who then overhears Clay comforting his daughter.
In 2019, Jess learns that, as the prominent horse’s “fame waned” (86), its skeleton had largely been forgotten. She and Catherine compare the skeleton to portraits by Edward Troye and Thomas Scott. They resolve to undertake a collaborative research project involving the skeleton.
