Summary

In response to Everell’s attempt on the prison, Magawisca was quietly moved to the dungeon in Volume II, Chapter VII. Hope had recovered and joined the household for the evening. She defended the timid Faith against Mrs. Grafton’s criticisms about her appearance. Governor Winthrop asked Hope to recount the events of her capture, which she began by asking all for forgiveness and condemning Sir Philip. In a private meeting, Hope begged Governor Winthrop for Magawisca’s release in vain. Esther entered their bedroom and began to sob, vaguely claiming Hope had betrayed her, and that she would forgive her soon.
