Summary

In Volume II, Chapter IV, Hope informed Digby that she would meet “friends” that night (127). After dining with the family, Hope walked to the shore where a canoe carrying her sister, Magawisca, Oneco, and Mononotto approached. Hope was happy to see her sister, but was disheartened by her unfamiliarity in language and dress. Her sister could not recall all of Hope’s memories and refused her bribes to bring her back. A “bright light” temporarily lit the shore, but Hope begged them to linger (131). As she and her sister said their tearful goodbyes, “a boat filled with armed men” approached, and the men kidnapped Magawisca and Faith (131). For leverage, Oneco took Hope captive.
