Summary

While standing guard, Digby and Everell watched Magawisca run into the woods in Volume I, Chapter IV. Everell defended Magawisca as “true and noble-minded” while Digby questioned her loyalties (25). Digby told him stories about his involvement in the Pequot war until he heard footsteps in the woods. Magawisca soon returned, and when Everell approached her, she began to cry. He declared his trust in her, and she described the massacre of her tribe. Her mother sensed “danger and death” just before the English struck (28). Supported by the Narragansetts, the English attacked the innocent tribe and burned their homes. They killed mercilessly, and when her father, Mononotto, returned, the survivors blamed him. Her brother, Samoset, was captured and killed for refusing to give away his tribe’s location. The survivors of the Pequot and other tribes banded together...
