Murad
Murad is a young man living and working in Tangier as a tour guide. He struggles to find enough clients to make a living and help his family out financially. He dreams of emigrating to Spain in order to find work and finally make his family proud. He desires to earn enough money that his mother will not have financial insecurities anymore.
At the beginning of the novel, Murad crosses over illegally and is apprehended by the Spanish immigration authorities. He survives the treacherous journey and swim across the strait, idealizing the beauty of the Spanish terrain all the while. As the novel continues, readers get an insight into how difficult Murad's life was before he made the decision to leave Morocco, providing some justification for why he would choose to do so.
