Summary
Murad thinks about the fourteen kilometers that separate him from leaving Morocco and crossing over into Spain. He is huddled in an overcrowded boat and he can see the Spanish coastline approaching. He dreams of the life he can have in Spain although it will be hard. He sits next to a teenage girl, Faten, a tall man named Aziz, and a mother of three children, Halima. Murad thinks about the illegal immigrant who cannot afford a boat passage and risk traveling in trucks.
The boat stops suddenly, and the men attempt to fix it. When Faten begins to cry, a man with a scarred face shouts at her. Murad stands up for Faten, and Aziz is able to fix the boat.
As the boat pulls closer to Tarifa, the immigrants must get out and swim the rest of the way. Murad attempts...
