Intersectional Feminism

One of Mikki’s main goals for this book is to encourage readers to become intersectional feminists. Intersectional feminism is defined as an approach to the movement that takes into consideration the various intersections of a person’s identity, such as race, class, (dis)ability, and sexual orientation. Mainstream feminism, by contrast, has traditionally focused on the needs of middle- to upper-class white women and neglected the specific needs that arise for women who are living in marginalized communities. These are the women Mikki is speaking of in the subtitle when she identifies this book as “notes from the women that a movement forgot.” Intersectional feminism is inherently more inclusive. Furthermore, it also acknowledges that different people have different needs based on where they are coming from and how their unique and diverse backgrounds impact their lives.
