"Reproductive Justice, Eugenics, and Maternal Mortality" - Mikki has had difficult pregnancies and nearly lost her life when she hemorrhaged during her fifth pregnancy. She required an abortion to save her life and suffered under flawed medical care. An article she wrote about the experience led to months of harassment from anti-abortion advocates. Mainstream feminists wanted her to become an advocate at a time when she simply needed to survive. The United States has a higher-than-average maternal mortality rate and this disproportionately impacts Black mothers. Access to health care needs to be framed as a feminist issue and human right, and reproductive justice needs to encompass more than just the abortion debate.
