Chapters 7, 8 and 9 Summary
Over the next three days, Madelyne has raging fever that prompts dreams and nightmares. She often dreams of Odysseus and at one point boasts that she has Duncan as her protector and that he'd do whatever she wants. She also becomes quite ardent with Duncan and he's reluctant to leave her side at all, lest she offer up kisses to one or the other of his brothers. During one of the dreams, she fights the Cyclops - a one-eyed monster who eats Odysseus' soldiers - and strikes Edmond on the cheek, giving him a black eye.
When Madelyne is feeling better, a servant named Maude enters her room. She seems frightened until she discovers that Madelyne's screams over the previous days were the result of fever - not a "simple mind." Maude and Gerty are amazed that Madelyne wants a bath...
