Chapters 4, 5 and 6 Summary
A servant chases Louddon and tells him that Duncan and his soldiers attacked the castle, burning everything that would burn and taking Madelyne. When the soldiers return to the castle, they are angry, overlooking the fact that they acted dishonorably toward Duncan by taking him prisoner when he entered the castle under a flag of truce.
Louddon is important in the king's court. He serves as a "secretary of sorts," deciding who will have an audience with the king though his decisions are often based on whether that person offers a sufficient bribe. Now Louddon knows that if his attempt to kill Duncan were discovered, his position in the court would be jeopardized. Louddon doesn't join the battle, but sends his men to attack Duncan and his troops, returning Madelyne to Louddon's castle.
