Summary

In Chapter 34, Meena returns to Ammi’s house after losing the trial. She hears the rhythmic beating of drums approaching their home and realizes that her brothers are on their way to kill her, emboldened by their legal acquittal in Abdul’s death. She tells Ammi to take Abru into the field and hide while she stays in the house awaiting the mob. She knows that the only way to save her daughter is to face the zealous mob.

In Chapter 35, Smita and Mohan arrive at Ammi’s home and see the crowd of angry men beating Meena to death. Smita darts between the assailants and cradles Meena’s bloody body. Meena whispers to Smita that Abru and Ammi are hiding in the tall grasses before the mob pulls her away and breaks Meena’s neck. Mohan knows that the crowd...
