Miss Mooney
Miss Mooney is the narrator and main character in the story “Bettering Myself.” Miss Mooney is a teacher at a Catholic school who believes that she is being treated unfairly and given the dumbest students in the school to teach. She is not a good teacher and often talks to the students about her sex life instead of teaching them math. When it is time for her students to take achievement tests, Miss Mooney changes her students’ answers on the tests so that it will appear they have been learning. Miss Mooney drinks to excess, often arriving at school drunk to teach her classes. She agrees to stop calling her ex-husband when he bribes her with more money.
