Aunt Cilla's Address

Aunt Cilla's address is a symbol of hope because Liza apparently believed she would find help there for her struggling family. The fact that Liza had Dicey write down the address several times and memorize it hints that Liza never expected to make the entire trip with them.

The Car

The Tillerman's car symbolizes security at the opening of the novel because the children hope Liza will return here. Leaving this relative security is difficult for them though Dicey does not see any other option. When the police sell the car, the money Dicey receives becomes a similar symbol of security.

Tears
