Summary

In Chapter 7, Dicey examines the map and decides to stay with Route 1 because it is the shortest distance. Dicey reads an inscription about returning home. She wonders about the meaning of home, including the possibility that a person is never truly going to remain in a single place until they die. She dismisses that as “an awful thought” and decides “Only living people had homes” (107). They continue to walk. Looking back later, Dicey remembers only pieces of these days. They spend nights in various places. It rains a lot, and Dicey carries the map under her shirt, tucked under her arm. They spend a night near a college campus in New Haven. Dicey tucks the children into some bushes and keeps watch from a bench. She is trying to figure out how she can continue this journey when a young man approaches...
