Summary
In Chapter 4, Dicey and the others wake. James, as always, says, “It's still true.” They have a drink from a water hose at a service station. At a small store, Dicey tells a young store clerk one of many lies, saying they are planning to spend the day at a Rockland State Park. He tells her about the park, sells her a fishhook, and gives her a length of fishing line. Then, he tells her how to dig for clams. Dicey has potatoes, apples, and only 26 cents left when they reach the beach, which is usually deserted except on weekends. They often sang with Liza. Now, they sing as they walk down the road to the park. James finds mussels, and they steam them over a fire. That night, Dicey encounters two teenagers, Edie and Louis. They mistake Dicey for a boy...
