Letter

Mickey's letter is symbolic of identity. Writing the letter allows Mickey to use and to reclaim her voice. Once it goes viral, Mickey realizes that she is being seen and heard for the first time. The letter ultimately helps her to rediscover her true self.

Wave

Wave is symbolic of oppression. When Mickey first starts working for Wave, she feels empowered and accomplished. The longer she is with the company, however, the more toxic the workplace proves to be. The marginalization and prejudice she experiences while with Wave represent the more large-scale systemic racism faced by Black Americans.

Maryland

Maryland is symbolic of retreat. When Mickey leaves New York, she travels to her hometown. She is hopeful that leaving Astoria will resolve her troubles. However, by going to Maryland, Mickey is hiding from her conflicts instead of confronting and dealing with them.
