Summary
In Chapter 14, although Mickey had told Grandma Anna she was on vacation, Mickey sensed she knew the truth. She gave Mickey tasks, but “didn’t press” (123).
Three days later, Mickey called Lex. She considered telling Lex “she missed her” and asking to “come home, but she hesitated,” still upset (125).
Grandma Anna sent Mickey to the grocery store. Driving her car flooded Mickey with memories. At Safeway, Mickey “kept her head down,” afraid of seeing her grandparents’ friends (128). In line, she glanced up “at the person who’d rung her up,” shocked to see it was Tee (129). She raced out of the store. In the car, Mickey was overwhelmed by “frustration and desire” (130). Years had passed since seeing Tee, but the memories “felt fresh” (130).
