Summary

In Chapter 1, Mickey’s coworker Chelsea invited her to a “beauty event after work” (1). Expecting the usual slog of similar events, Mickey “didn’t expect to find out that her job . . . was in jeopardy” (1). Chelsea pulled her aside to say that their boss Nina had said there would be “an opening” on Mickey’s team in the upcoming months (2).

Mickey had written for Wave for the past year. Although she often thought her job was at stake, she had not expected it to happen this way. Writing was important to Mickey. However, she “didn’t have the time” to write her own pieces since working for Wave (4). In the car on the way home, Chelsea reassured Mickey. Mickey was unsure what to believe.
