Summary
In “Nineteen,” Marta arrives just before sunset. She brings a cherry pie that she claims is left over from the bakery. Marta says she hopes they can be friends because they have so much in common. Maggie takes this to mean that Marta thinks Ewan is guilty of Petra’s murder. When Maggie invites Marta inside, Marta decides she cannot handle going inside. They talk outside instead. Marta tells Maggie that Ewan described her properly in the novel to a point. She claims they never discussed any possibility that Curtis did not kill Katie and himself. Maggie apologizes for what her father did by rewriting Marta’s history. Maggie takes a chance and asks Marta if she had ever considered that Ewan was right, that Curtis did not kill Katie.
