Summary
In “Eight” from Maggie’s novel, Maggie reads through the Book and looks at the Polaroids trying to find evidence that what Brian said was true. Maggie is so startled when one of the bells rings that she jumps from her chair, knocking it backward. Realizing someone is in the house with her she grabs a knife as she heads out of the kitchen. She hears music: “You are sixteen, going on seventeen…” (154). Maggie runs up the stairs to the third-floor study and screams as she opens the door. There is no one in the study, but the lights are on, and the record player is turned up full volume. She figures that whoever was there started the record player and then rang the bell on their way out. Maggie reasons it was a ghoul, probably a teen fan of the Book who...
