Summary
In “Saturday,” Jack is eating lunch during the break from his community service when he hears someone yelling to be left alone. He sees a person he believes is Jonny Rumsford, a large boy who has always been “a little slow” (166), being heckled by a group of other students. When he sees someone throw something that hits Jonny in the head, he sees himself as others see him. Angry, he takes off after the bullies and asks them what Jonny did to them. When they gang up on him, he begins to fight them without even thinking through what he is doing. Libby grabs Jack by the arm and pulls him away from the other boys. When the boys call Libby “Flabby Strout” (167) it makes Jack even angrier. He punches the guy who made the comment.
