California is symbolic of the past. Indeed, because this is the place where Kathleen grew up, returning to California at the novel's start threatens to submerge her in her former life once more. Throughout her time back in her hometown, Kathleen does become increasingly preoccupied with old relationships and distant memories.

Kathleen's Program

Kathleen's PhD program is symbolic of the future. Ever since Oren broke up with her, Kathleen has considered dropping out of the program. This is because, without Oren, Kathleen has no idea what her future will look like. Without Oren, the program no longer seems relevant. She therefore takes a leave of absence to avoid launching into a life that scares and confuses her.
