In order to understand this story, it is important to see the dynamics between the young man and the young woman in terms of the ways in which women have traditionally been perceived in Western culture. To be more specific, in Western culture, women have often been categorized in two distinct categories, based on their relative sexual behavior. This dichotomy has been referred to as the "virgin/ whore" split. In more colloquial terms, this dichotomy can be referred to as the "good good/bad girl" dichotomy, whereby the "good" girl is one who is perceived as sexually pure and the "bad" girl is perceived as sexually active.
