1944 - 2 Summary
Ida finds herself missing the Thousand, since she mistrusts her new roommates. She finds the money left to her by Eppetondo in his mattress, and she and Useppe move to a rented room, out of Pietralata to Testaccio, near the school where she had taught. The school is being used by the military, but Ida is able to teach classes. The area is filled with German soldiers and she is perpetually anxious. She still holds the little note thrown to her from the train, and is afraid of seeing Signora DiSegni, to whom she confessed her Jewishness. But the Signora did get on the train with her family to Auschwitz where almost all of them were immediately sent to their deaths, including Signora DiSegni and her family, as well as the midwife who named her child after Ida.
