The Flats
The flats in King’s Court symbolize infidelity and polygamous relationships. Eli pays for Afi to live there, while living in a different house with Muna. Likewise, Richard pays for Evelyn to live there even when he finds a new girlfriend. Savior and Lucy, workers at King’s Court, inform Afi that many married businessmen pay for flats in the buildings for their girlfriends to live in.
Driving
Driving symbolizes independence. When first moving to Accra, Afi is very impressed that Yaya and Evelyn both know how to drive themselves. Afi herself relies on her driver, however once she is pregnant and begins to feel more comfortable exerting her agency, she enrolls herself in driving lessons, symbolizing her desire to regain control on her life.
