Ho
The novel opens in Ho, a small town in Ghana in the year 2014, which can be deduced by Afi noting at the beginning that her father died 10 years ago, in 2004. Go is the town where Medie herself was raised and went to school. Ho, while small and provincial, is portrayed as a lively place of community. Some resources are scarce, but Afi has friends and family in abundance.
Aunty Ganyo is the most powerful person in town, and her wealth and generosity with it cause most townspeople to worship her, including Afi and her mother at the start of the novel.
