Book One, Star-Crossed: Chapters 17-23 Summary
In chapter seventeen, Will becomes ill and is cared for by his Aunt Vannie rather than Aunt Eleanor, who normally cares for him in illness. Vannie brings Will food and tea, spending time playing chess with him while he convalesces in bed. On the sixth day Will is better, but he pretends to be sick still to continue to gain Vannie's undivided attention.
In chapter eighteen, Will and Vannie play one last game of chess in which Will nearly beats Vannie. Afterward they embrace and Vannie kisses Will. Will, who does not know what to do, finds himself being seduced by the older and wiser Vannie. Afterward, Vannie tells Will his irresistible quality will take him far, but Will wonders if that is not a bad thing.
