Summary
Chapter 33: After many years of collecting DNA and studying families, DeLisi's research project was shut down in 2000 when the pharmaceutical company she was working with was bought out by Pfizer. Around the same time, the progress of the Human Genome Project suggested that treatments and cures for a wide variety of diseases were forthcoming. Researchers began doing genome-wide association studies (GWAS) that found that many multiple genetic irregularities worked together to increase the chances of a person having schizophrenia and even that increase was not large. Without funding, DeLisi had to stop her research.
Chapter 34: Lindsay eventually gave up her guardianship of Peter and he became a ward of the state. He was frequently hospitalized for long periods of time. He was highly medicated and began the modern (and humane) version of shock therapy. For a time, the shock therapy worked, but...
