Summary
In Chapter 5, Mallory reveals that Caroline and Ted invite her to join them for family activities on the weekends, but Mallory does not go because Mallory does not “want to intrude on their family time” (66). Mallory looks forward to her workweek with Teddy. Caroline mentions that Teddy has been wetting the bed and that Teddy is self-conscious. Mallory overhears Teddy talking to himself in his room. Mallory answers a call from the elementary school principal who wants to talk to Caroline. Mallory sees Teddy’s latest drawing of a man “dragging a woman by the ankles, pulling her lifeless body across the ground” (69). Mallory asks Teddy about the drawing. Teddy explains that Anya acts out the scene for Teddy to draw. Mallory puts the drawing aside for Teddy’s parents, but Teddy explains that “Anya says she wants you to have it” (72). Later...
