Summary
The memoir begins with Jarrett and his grandfather driving together on the highway. Grandfather is wearing glasses and smoking, Jarrett is a teenager with longer hair for a boy. The colors are muted but dark; mostly grays, beige, and light orange. The title page of the Prologue shows the car enter between two gates and a sign that says “City of Worcester; Hope Cemetery” (1). After entering the cemetery, they switch drivers so Jarrett is in the driver’s seat. His grandfather coaches Jarrett to drive but he is too touchy with the brakes. As they drive Jarrett’s grandfather makes jokes. The dialogue switches to Jarrett’s internal thoughts as he reflects on his grandparents and their driving habits, and how his life is complicated.
