Chapter 13
In Chapter 13, Mrs. Casnoff tells Sophie about her father’s family. Usually someone has to be born a witch, but Sophia’s great-grandmother Alice was transformed into a witch by a woman named Thorne who was involved in black magic. Alice disappeared and was found by the Council in a London asylum. She was pregnant. After she gave birth, she and her baby were brought to Hecate. The baby was Sophia's grandmother, Lucy. Alice escaped and was murdered by the L’Occhio di Dio, who have a distinctive way of killing witches. Lucy stayed at Hecate to be observed by the Council because Alice had been the strongest Prodigium that had ever been recorded. Further study revealed that her high level of magic had been passed down to Lucy, Sophie’s father, and to Sophie herself.
