Pages 389-429 Summary

Teg finds himself in the luxurious upholstered backseat of a ground car with tinted windows. In Ysai, the car heads into a gaudy neighborhood built from scraps. The driver drops Teg at the windowless bolthole he has specified. Sensing no immediate menace, Teg darts into the bright foyer and up a lift tube to the 57th floor, where he recalls a private dining room.

A tall man enters, obviously military and mercenary: Jafa Muzzafar, Regional Commander for the Forces of Dur (of which Teg has not heard). With caution bordering on fear, he assures Teg that nothing that has befallen him is his fault, seemingly believing that an attack force frees Teg.

As Lucilla and Burzmali enter Ysai at 11 PM, the denizens of the still-busy streets fascinate her. Burzmali guides Lucilla into an unappetizing eating establishment, where she gets into character...
