Margot
Margot is perhaps the leading character in this story, the one the reader learns the most about through the course of the novel.
Margot is the significantly older sister of Thandi and oldest daughter of Delores. When she was barely 14, Delores sold her daughter for the first time to a man for sex. Delores earned $600 from that encounter. Margot found where her mother had hidden the money and gave it to her uncle with the hopes that he would leave her alone.
Although Margot felt protective of Thandi and wanted to keep her from the lifestyle she had lived because of her mother’s greed, Margot was also resentful of Thandi.
