Summary
In Chapter 21, Sister Benjamin discovers Thandi wandering the campus. Thandi tells her she feels sick and goes to the nurse’s office. The nurse examines her and assumes Thandi is pregnant because she wears a sweatshirt all the time. Thandi assures her that she is not pregnant. They pray and Sister Benjamin advises Thandi to concentrate on her studies.
After school, Thandi goes to look for Charles. When she cannot find him in any of the usual places she goes inside the main house. The house is dark and smells of urine and feces. She finds him inside, giving his mother a bath. Charles hears a creak from the floorboards and sees Thandi. She notices a look of growing anger in his eyes before she runs.
In Chapter 22, Thandi believes that it is her blackness that connects her to the bad...
