Summary
In Chapter 4, Margot has sex with a man named Horace but she thinks of Verdene. When they are finished, she tells Horace that she has to go. They have spent the evening together, eating, drinking and having sex. Horace is her oldest customer. He promises to marry her and take her back to Germany with him even though he has a wife and children. Margot lies and tells him that she has to meet her mother. He gives her $300 for the evening.
Later at Verdene’s house, Verdene watches as Margot sleeps in her bedroom. She stops when she sees the picture of her mother on the nightstand. Usually she turns it around when Margot is there because it makes Margot uncomfortable. Margot tries to convince Verdene that she is ready for them to have sexual relations.
