Summary

In Chapter 1, Margot works officially at the Palm Star Resort as the leading front desk clerk but also sells her services as a prostitute after hours. When she leaves the hotel late, Margot often wonders if the employees ever gossip about her and what she is doing there so late. She keeps working hard with the hopes that one day her younger sister, Thandi, will make everything better. She just has to keep working until that time.

Margot catches a ride home with Maxi, a man with whom she attended primary school. Maxi was smart in school but dropped out when he told a teacher the teacher was ignorant for thinking that Christopher Columbus discovered Jamaica.
