Summary
Chapter 1, “Samantha,” opens with a description of Oscar and Lovie Sweeney who opened Captain Sweeney's Seafood Market in Prospect, South Carolina, in 1959. Termite damage prompted Lovie and her daughters to conduct a major renovation, and they are fighting deadlines to get the market open again. The three daughters, Sam, Faith, and Jackie are discussing the final touches and Jackie insists that they change a wall color from white to linen to create a softer feel. While Sam is anxious to begin stocking shelves, she has invested so much money into the project that she trusts Jackie's advice.
