Collaboration between Police and Private Investigators
Sometimes, official departments are not eager to collaborate with private sector investigators who could, potentially, help solve a case. Sheriff King is not interested in giving information to or receiving information from Morgan and Lance.
Through the course of the novel, Leigh differentiates the role of the private investigator from that of the police to demonstrate how much Lance and Morgan’s jobs have changed as a result of their transition from public law enforcement to private. Morgan and Lance no longer have all of the tools that they once had at their fingertips to easily investigate crime. They also must try to remain friendly with law enforcement officials so they can get all the information possible about the crime they are investigating.
